The most common door repairs.
On the face of it, doors are fairly basic, aren’t they? Rectangle piece of wood inside a bigger rectangle hole, a couple of hinges, a handle and that’s about it. What could possibly go wrong, right?
So why are there so many different door repairs?
That’s a very good question and I hope to give you some helpful information about the most common door repairs and what can be done to fix them.
Common door repair # 1. “My door is sticking”
So your door is stuck on the side or the top. Most people would automatically think that the door is the problem and pull the saw out. An old builder once told me this and I’ve never forgotten it. He said “doors don’t change shape, holes do”. He’s spot on too. Buildings move over time, causing the door openings to change shape and the door doesn’t quite fit as it used to. Your particular door repair may be caused by any number of reasons. It could be the hinges are loose, movement in the door jamb or house frame or even too much paint on the door & door jamb.
If the door repair is not obvious to you, please give me a call. I’d be happy to help you out.
Common door repair # 2. ” My door won’t latch properly”
This door repair is usually an easy fix. The door latch doesn’t line up with the strike plate on the door jamb and the door just will not click shut. Over time, the hinge screws can mysteriously slacken off, causing the door to come away from the wall ever so slightly, like less than 1mm. This causes the door to drop ever so slightly and the latch to just miss the door jamb hole. Check the screws, mainly the top hinge and it may solve your door repair woes. If not, the door latch hole and the strike plate may need to be adjusted to realign with the door latch to enable the door to close correctly.
Common door repair # 3. ” My sliding glass door is hard to open”
Very common door repair this one. In fact it would be the one door repair I do the most . Sliding glass doors are very heavy. They sit on little wheels located inside the sliding door frame at the bottom and run along a thin guide track inside the door frame. Over time, like everything, these wheels can wear out, become brittle or even break and will need to be replaced. But sometimes all the wheels need is a bit of lovin’. A good spray with WD40 and the wheels may loosen up for you.
Another thing to do is check that the door track is clean. A vacuum and a damp cloth will do the job. Avoid putting lubricant on the track. It does nothing to assist the operation of the door. It will just give the dirt something to stick to.
Say the sliding door wheels do need to be replaced. Understand that there are as many different sliding door wheels as there are different sliding doors.
Common door repair # 4. ” My door rattles when it’s closed”
It’s one of those noises that may be going on unnoticed in the background, but once you tune into it, it’s ALL you can hear and it drives you crazy. The “quick fix ” for most people is to put something against the door or wedge some folded newspaper in there to stop the banging and rattling. Then forget about it…… until it starts again. The cause may be movement of the house over time or the door latch hole in the wrong position on the door jamb. Maybe you drew the short straw and your doors were installed on a Friday afternoon by a tradie, more excited about his weekend than your door installation . Hey. It happens.
