Here are some of the most common problems where you will need to fix a fence or repair a gate.
Broken or rotted fence post repair
This is likely what happened if your fence is no longer standing upright! The most common cause of a broken fence post is moisture around the post slowly rotting the base. As the wood rots, the post gets much weaker. After it reaches a certain point, it just takes a strong gust of wind and down goes the fence. Repairing this is a matter of digging out the old post, setting a new post in concrete, and then rebuilding the section that blew over. Ask about our steel fence post options so you won’t have to worry about it in the future!
Unstable Fence
If you can walk up to your fence and move it more than 1 or 2 inches, then it’s likely that a fence post has rotted out and is no longer supporting the fence. This is essentially the same thing as a broken fence post, your fence just hasn’t blown over yet.
Broken Fence Boards, palings or rails.
Here is another common issue that I run into. However, this is relatively easy and you are likely to be able to complete this repair on your own. Simply go to your local Bunnings, pick up a couple of replacements and some nails or screws and attach the new fence boards. Easy! Or, give me a call and I’ll gladly help you out.
Sagging Gate
Just like doors, gates need regular maintenance in order to function their best. However, sometimes they are just built wrong to begin with. Either way, sagging gates are a common issue that you don’t have to live with. Most of the time reinforcing the gate with a cross member and some screws is more than enough to solve the issue. Occasionally, however, the gate may need to be rebuilt in order to function properly.
Gate Won’t Latch
As fences are exposed to harsh weather and the changing seasons, they tend to move around as the wood expands and contracts. This can cause the gate to become misaligned and therefore not allow the gate to latch. Repairing this issue can be as simple as moving the latch or adjusting the gate appropriately.
A broken fence or gate can be a real pain, especially if you have dogs or are concerned with your family’s security. But it doesn’t have to be!
Just give Cranbourne Home Improvements a call and I’ll gladly help you get your fence back up and your gate functioning how it should.
