The first thing you need to consider before doing a TV wall mount installation is obvious.

Why should I hang my TV?

The benefits of wall mounting your TV are many. For instance, wall mounted TV’s are up and out of the way from young children, the elderly and pets, which keeps everyone safe. Furthermore, it will give your room a home theatre feel, so you can become immersed in your favourite TV show or get the popcorn out for movie night!  Also, using your wall space is a smart move on your part, because it gives you an uncluttered look and a feeling of having more space.

With your TV wall mounted, there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Everyone has a great view of the screen. Finally, a wall mounted TV is a lot harder for an “uninvited guest” to steal than a TV sitting on a stand, for the simple reason that it is bolted to the wall.

Here are more things for you to consider before doing a TV wall mount installation in your Cranbourne East home.

What is the best position to hang my TV?

Talk about stating the obvious! Well, maybe it’s not quite so obvious. There’s certainly more to it than just choosing a wall and telling the TV installation guy ” just mount my TV on the wall, mate”. For instance, what is the TV wall made of? Is it timber or metal studs behind the plasterboard? Is it brick? Will the wall take the combined weight of the TV and the TV wall bracket? Another thing to take into account are the windows in the room because of glare on the screen. This problem may be overcome with the right TV wall mounting bracket. Finally, you need to consider the height you want the screen before you start drilling holes in the wall.

The optimum height from the floor to the centre of the screen is between 1.1m & 1.3m, depending on the screen size. This is the approximate eye level for an adult in the seated position, therefore, the perfect viewing height. TV’s can be mounted higher on the wall, but you may end up with a very stiff neck.

What will a TV wall mount installation cost me?

That’s a hard question to answer, because there are a number of factors to take into account like;

  • The size and weight of the TV
  • The type TV bracket required
  • How high on the wall you want the TV installed
  • Are you okay with the cables dangling down the wall, or would you prefer them to be hidden?
  • Are the TV, Blu Ray and gaming cables you already have, long enough?
  • On what type of wall do you wish to hang the TV?

The cost for a TV wall mount installation for a small to mid size TV should be around $120 to $175. Large TV wall mounted on a fully adjustable bracket could run anywhere north of $500.00.

The thing with TV wall mounting brackets is, you tend to get what you pay for. There are some cheap and nastys around. That said, there are many very good quality TV brackets on the market at very reasonable prices. “Highest price” does not always equal “best TV bracket”.

What is your cabling plan once the TV is wall mounted?

Do you have a place for your TV accessories? Blu Ray player, Foxtel box, gaming console etc? The idea of having a TV wall mount installation, is to create the look you desire. That won’t happen if the TV cables are dangling down the wall from the TV to the furniture. Depending on the location and height of the TV, there are two simple ways to conceal the cables.

  • Cables can be fully concealed inside the wall cavity, or
  • Partially concealed behind a cable cover

These two options are generally inexpensive and really give the TV installation a finished look.

If you decide to install the TV higher or on a brick wall, the cost to conceal the cables will increase and in some cases, may not be possible. Furthermore, if additional power points need to be installed to mount your TV, a licensed electrician is the only person qualified to conduct this work.

Which TV wall mount bracket do I need?

This is a question which raises more questions, but it really comes down to this; What do you want from your viewing experience?

For example, if you want to hang the TV higher up a wall, then a bracket with a tilt function would allow the screen to be tilted slightly downward to the audience. If you have an open plan living area with 2 viewing locations like lounge & dining, a bracket with a swivel function could be best. You can have the TV facing the dining table when you like and move it back on the wall for your main viewing. In the bedroom, a swivel or flat wall mount bracket would be best. There are even brackets that mount on the ceiling, but these are more for business premises than in your home. These types of TV installations are generally a lot more complex, therefore making it quite a bit more expensive.

Will I need new cables when installing my TV wall mount?

In most cases, No. The cables you are using now should be fine. There are only a couple of reasons why new cables will be required.

  1. When the cables are just too short when the TV is on the wall, or
  2. If the cable plug ins at the back of the TV protrude out too far.

The cables must be long enough to comfortably reach from the TV to the power and accessories. The extra distance for the cables to run inside the wall cavity could add up to 0.5m to 1m in length. So, you will need to check the power cable, the HDMI and any other cables to ensure you’re not left short. You can buy right angle adaptors for HDMI cables and universal power cables with a right angle plugs. If there is not a TV antenna plug near where the TV is to be wall mounted, a splitter box can be used to divert a new TV antenna cable to the right location. Specialist tools may be required to get the antenna cable from the roof space to the new TV antenna point.

What other options do I want with my wall mounted TV?

I can hear you now, “Mate, I just want to watch my TV”! I’m sure you do. Do you also want enjoy surround sound for that home theatre experience, or will you want to use your computer through the TV?

The main thing you need to consider here, is if the ports on the back or side of the TV are accessible. For instance, some TV brackets like a flat wall mount could make it difficult to access the HDMI port if there is not one on the side of the TV. Of course there is no issue when you connect your laptop & TV via bluetooth. With surround sound, you can add this later. Installing them does not have to be done at the same time the TV gets wall mounted, but it is easier. You can buy your surround speakers, plug them in and work out where they give the best sound before installing them.
